About TORP

Recovery takes courage. We bring the expertise.

The life you’re looking towards is worth it.

Let’s create something meaningful together.

What is TORP?

The Optimal Recovery Programme is an outcomes-based outpatient
addiction recovery programme with a holistic & human-centred approach, focused on meaningful results.

We shift the focus from traditional recovery models to a more collaborative, flexible, client-driven process.

We support recovery from alcohol, substance abuse and behavioural addictions.

Why?

We could all use more humanity in the world.

Traditional inpatient treatment models, while suited to acute stabilisation, may often prioritise abstinence within
highly controlled environments while neglecting the human element. What’s missing is a truly holistic approach;
one that supports long term & sustainable outcomes, positive regard for the individual, and healthy integration into everyday life.

At the core of the TORP vision is a humanistic approach, one that moves beyond the reductive view of a person
as a mere collection of symptoms to be managed or suppressed.

Instead, we see someone deserving of dignity and collaboration.

The Human (as a system, within larger systems) remains in focus.
Always.

The frame of reference of the individual in recovery is our lens.

It’s not a clinical checklist, it’s your lived experience.

We don’t just understand it from the outside, looking in.

We’ve been there. We get it. We were once you.

That’s why we’re putting the human back into “recovery”.

How?

TORP introduces an effective & accessible recovery pathway into the South African addiction & healthcare landscape;
we are the bridge that treats addiction not as an isolated clinical event, but as a valid human experience.

In a society marked by collective & individual trauma, the humanistic framework isn’t optional - it’s essential.
It provides the necessary structure for individuals to reclaim their autonomy, dignity & ownership of the recovery journey.

We reframe recovery as a journey of personal growth and self actualisation - not just symptom suppression.
We address the underlying challenges in identity & purpose, that so often fuel addictive cycles.

We keep clients connected to their support systems and everyday lives, while offering structured clinical intervention.

The result?

Less stigma. Less institutionalisation. Far better odds of achieving & sustaining recovery.

When?

You decide.

When you’re worth the try. When we’re worth your try.

No pressure. Nothing to lose.

A free call. A chat over coffee.

Where?

Overlooking the ocean.

In the stunningly beautiful suburb of Umhlanga Rocks - just a short drive north of Durban, KZN.

And when life or distance gets in the way? We’re available online, wherever you are.

Who?

Human to human.

Our clinical team is authentic, sincere, flexible … and yes, we serve a mean cup of coffee.

Why?

You’re worth it.

You deserve not just to survive, but to thrive.

We know that, because we’ve walked the same road.

Why TORP?

TORP is not intended to replace inpatient treatment or twelve-step programs, but in practice, these option aren’t suited to everyone.

We’ve created a structured recovery pathway rooted in a strengths-based, individualistic approach. We integrate multiple therapeutic modalities with core recovery principles,
in a flexible programme offering recovery coaching, psychotherapy, peer support, practical life skills, interpersonal counselling, assessments (among other services)
- all while keeping you anchored in everyday life, action & connection.

This isn’t about replacing what works. It’s about filling the gap …
offering flexibility when you need it, continuity of care following acute treatment, a safety net during those high-risk first weeks & months,
an accessible & affordable alternative to traditional recovery paths, an optional route for those less suited to inpatient treatment.

Recovery is a very non-linear path.
That’s why we’re here, every step of the way: the doubts, the lows, the unknowns, the tough days, every win along the way.
Helping you rebuild your sense of self and renewed direction in life.
A life worth living.

Who Created TORP?

The project was conceptualised and developed by Michael J. Theron, a Clinical Psychologist specialising in addiction treatment and recovery,

Through his academic & clinical experience, Michael recognised a vital need: to address the individual and the addiction as interconnected but distinct entities.
This principle forms the foundation of the programme.

Originally implemented on a smaller scale, TORP was later worked and expanded to meet a growing demand for outpatient recovery services.
Over time, it became clear that many individuals benefit from an integrated intervention, with structured but flexible support, over rigid protocols.

TORP offers a practical, progressive alternative in the addiction recovery space.

A human project, at the core of it all.

Where Does TORP Fit In?

The above diagram represents the conventional options in terms of addiction treatment & recovery.
As a sequence of interventions, it represents most acute to least acute.

Across the South African healthcare landscape, however, not all of these are equally available or accessible.

TORP specialises in Outpatient, Aftercare and Hybrid sectors.

Given general addiction treatment & mental healthcare dynamics in South Africa, clients are often funnelled into one option or another (sadly not dictated by client suitability)
This may not always be in the interests of the client’s context or a positive, sustainable recovery.

**

TORP does clinically assess all clients upon introduction to the programme.
We take no risks. If at any time, before or during the programme, our clinical team feels the client may
be better served by a higher level or alternate route of care, the client will be sensitively informed & professionally supported towards the recommended route(s).
