About T.O.R.P.
Here is where opportunity meets expertise.
Recovery takes courage & we’re here to help you take the first steps with confidence.
The life you’re looking towards is worth it …
Let’s create something meaningful together.
What is T.O.R.P.?
T.O.R.P. is an outcome-based outpatient addiction recovery programme
with a holistic, person-centred approach,
focused on meaningful results.
We shift the focus from the traditional “medical model”
to a collaborative, client-driven recovery model.
Our aim isn’t merely abstinence,
but to foster a positive & holistic and sustainable recovery
rooted in personal meaning …
which is the only truly sustainable foundation for recovery in our complex environment.
Traditional Medical / Inpatient Models,
while often suited to acute stabilisation,
often retain a focus on achieving abstinence within
controlled environments or tightly structured programmes,
clinician-driven decisions, substance removal, symptom suppression, etc.
often lacking a human approach, sustainable recovery,
effective & healthy reintegration into everyday life.
T.O.R.P. introduces an effective & accessible recovery pathway
into the South African addiction space & healthcare landscape -
the critical bridge required to treat addiction not as an isolated illness,
but as a lived experience requiring practical management alongside the many
challenges & complexities of everyday life, incl. personal & professional obligations.
We focus on the maintenance of the client’s connection
to their support systems and the real world,
while providing high-level, structured clinical intervention,
thus reducing the stigma of institutionalisation,
while increasing sustainability, support & successful outcomes.
Central to T.O.R.P. is our Humanistic Approach,
which progresses well beyond the reductive view of the client
as a mere collection of symptoms or an illness to be suppressed.
In a society frequently. marked by both collective & individual trauma,
the humanistic framework provides the psychological structure necessary for individuals
to reclaim their agency and sense of self worth.
By reframing recovery as a journey of personal growth & self actualisation,
and by prioritising the therapeutic alliance,
we address the underlying challenges in personal identity & purpose
that so often fuel addictive cycles.
CORE PRINCIPLES
Client-Centered Goals:
Outcomes are defined by the individual rather than solely by a clinician.
Holistic Focus
Addresses the wellbeing of the "whole person”
including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health,
as opposed purely the pathology, or removal / suppression of symptoms.
Active Measurement
Progress within the programme is reviewed regularly, tracking tangible improvement in the client’s quality of life and self-directed goals.
Autonomy, Empowerment
The client is seen & respected as an "expert by experience"
and plays an active role in directing their recovery, backed by necessary sensitivity & support,
thus increasing their sense of hope, responsibility, and control.
Non-Linear Process
The recognition that recovery is most often not a straight line;
it may involve setbacks, requires flexibility and a focus on
building resilience, coping mechanisms & functional skills
to handle life’s challenges & obstacles, rather than eliminating them entirely.
CORE COMPONENTS (CHIME):
Connectedness: Community connection & social support systems.
Hope and Optimism: Belief in the possibility of a better future.
Identity: Reclaiming a positive sense of self beyond substances, symptoms or illness.
Meaning & Purpose: Discovering personal meaning & fulfilment in life.
Empowerment: Facilitating control of one’s life and decision-making.
